Artist Statement
I am interested in the in-between spaces. This happens in my work where the imagery hovers between the process of painting itself and a recollection of an image. In those in-between places of reference, sometimes my work reminds me of the weaving of a tapestry. Other times, my pieces recall artists past. Many times I am reminded of a landscape quality, like the light reflecting across the ripples in a body of water, or the sensation of being enveloped by a landscape space as if in a field or underwater. Sometimes my paintings do not reveal a recognizable image to me at all, but simply refer me to my process. There is a sense of effortless in my work, which upon closer inspection reveals many layers. My paintings open up slowly in identifying their development. For me, layering has always been an interest of mine. An in-between space develops in the process as well, where finding those moments of when to stop the repeated layer or when to continue it through to its entirety.

I begin in a very direct and immediate fashion, and build upon that underlying structure. This immediacy in my work can be seen in rubbings, printing, and drawing. Texture has become a repeated theme in my work. I am interested in not only creating a low-relief texture in my work, but also trying to get the feeling of that texture imbedded in the material that I am making it on. There is a subtlety to the texture, where even rough materials like sand and glass beads have a softness and beauty to them. I am constantly evaluating my work whether to leave the beauty of the immediacy itself or to continue developing my pieces to find new forms and spaces. A lot of times I do not know the meaning of my pieces, just that when you stand in front of my work that it gives off a sensation for your body to react to or to move through the in-between spaces that are developed.
