Artist Statement
I began painting landscapes about a year and a half ago.  The idea came somewhat off-handedly, as a solution to a problem for one of my projects for school.  And I have been developing the use of natural space and the scene, ever since.

The landscape originally provided me with a starting point for constructing a painting.  I needed a way to get going, to break up the canvas, and to experiment with manipulating paint and medium.  I studied photographs of sunrise and twilight shots of the shore, the woods, and meadows.  It was the simple layering of color and form: ground, water, sky or ground, trees, sky, as well as the endless hues these could appear in, which attracted me most.  I used this three-layer division as a foundation upon which to build my surface.  It was most satisfying to me, to understand how the paint worked, in bringing light, texture, and tone to the objects and areas in the paintings.  I used my paint and medium to create translucent layers that would build up to form the textures of the landscape.  The light in the scene was revealed through openings in the layers.

As I learned to work towards making the image of a landscape in this indirect way, I introduced line and form by inserting simple drawings of figures, animals, and plants.  Sometimes I would use paint to integrate these objects into the background, and sometimes I would leave them flat on the surface.  As I was discovering landscape painting, I was also discovering a personal love for nature that I had not been as aware of before.  In order to identify this connection, I incorporated lines objects, and even patterns in my paintings and drawings.  This created a purpose for the landscape beyond the materials used to make it.

I have been making more frequent use of patterns and flat, stylized objects in my scapes.  These have come to offer me another method for breaking up space; one that requires me to operate within more of a field than a traditional spacial setup.  The more I study these decorative motifs, the more I become involved with paying attention to the natural world which inspired them.  I would like to refer to the light and tones and texture in nature by painting and drawing in a way that is revealing of the material and surface I am working with.  This “natural” way of working still requires the skill to represent life.  But it demands most an attention to materiality; in both the research and the physical act of painting.
