Artist Statement
My books, paper, print, projection and film are inspired by my volunteer work with Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW), Combat Paper, and Warrior Writers, a movement of veterans who voice their experience through writing and papermaking. My work fuses political and social content with everyday objects and tactile materials. Through my manipulation of scale, texture, and movement I translate political metaphors into interactive, visual conversations with the viewer.

There are two areas that I focus on in my artwork. The first is the struggle for women in the military; this is the first occupation where women have served in combat roles. The second is the parallel between experiencing life’s traumas and military combat. As a result of facing my own personal demons, I have developed a specific empathy for veterans. Pain and suffering exists in all of our lives, if we are willing to acknowledge our own wars.

My work has evolved and diversified as my life has taken shape. I grew up as a farm/ranch girl from the rural Midwest, where I attended a one-room schoolhouse. This type of isolation contrasts with my current multi-community environment. Building bridges between people and ideas in various communities is very important to me, my goal is to achieve this through art. My large-scale multimedia installations make the viewer part of the artwork and my artist books require interaction beyond traditional reading. With my artwork I seek to create a dialogue among different audiences about difficult subject matter.
