Artist Statement
I create artwork of motion to evoke emotion.
My artwork is an honest interpretation of the first moment of seeing or that first reaction to an event, music, or memory. It’s about capturing a moment in time, the first look; the beginning of gesture. I was a choreographer and dancer for most of my life and my painting style reflects that experience. I begin in my studio, as I would when I was a dancer choreographing a dance; one element moving into the next. I start with sketching a line, which flows into drawing a form and then meets in a painting, culminating into an expressionistic, impressionistic experience. I am constantly rediscovering new ideas in this process. I use a variety of materials including oil paint, pastel, watercolor, and mixed media to draw and paint on un-stretched canvas, as well as, stretched, and on a variety of paper.
Line, color, and directional forms are invented and invigorated into semi-abstracted figures, landscapes and still life that capture the evolving form. I aspire to capture the joy and conflict of the human form and in nature. I reflect this discord in a gestural, and painterly fashion. I create provocative and innocence within a picture frame representing my own ideas about femininity, which because of society’s pressures ha been threatened in so many ways. I explore ways of abstracting the rules of perspective, to project my presence in an environment. I attempt to depict a natural stillness, while knowing that everything is constantly shifting. I am charged with the energy to bring my own sense of truth and experience to the canvas.
I have had an extensive career teaching art to students of all levels and ages. My teaching is an integral part of my art making process. I never stop growing as an artist by listening to others and empowering students to create in their own personal style. |
