| Artist Statement
Many times while I paint, I feel like a conjurer, taking color, mixing it and applying it to a board or canvas. I am fascinated by the way a mark, which is expressive, can also be representational and how a gesture or density of paint can have duality.
At times I feel as if I am composing a piece of music, with each mark a note. Applying, subtracting, enlarging, simplifying, until harmony is reaches. I am attracted to the mysterious and subtle. The play of light, color and form of the three dimensional world is food for the visual appetite.
I attempt to achieve the recognizable but not the immediate, preferring the image to unfold and surprises to be found. Each painting has a strong relationship to the previous one and ideas develop and evolve as I am continuously challenged by the pursuit.

Artist Bio
Helene Halstuch lived in England and France for twenty years where she exhibited extensively before returning to the US. In 1995. Her landscapes, still lifes and monotypes are expressively painted and her use of light are reminiscent of Bonnard, Van Gogh and Cezanne. Halstuch paints in the Lot Valley in South West France where she lives part of the year, choosing tranquil and at times, mysterious subjects.
Her still lifes are equally strong with vivid colors and luscious brush strokes. Halstuch reinvents the monotype and uses it as an underlay for pastel and ink which creates a lively surface quality and vibrant image
