1. 100,001 accrete variation II, 2003-2004, 100,001 hand-knotted loops of jute twine
measured to the length of my hand linked together in a single strand, 4-1/2 miles
long
Viewers are encouraged to take a piece of twine enacting a ceremonial form of shared knowledge.
2. 2200 ft 2 accrete variation IV, 2003-2004, 2200 square feet of tissue paper, torn,
individually stacked and brushed with Varathane on a Plexiglas base, 17” x 17” x 9”
3. accrete variation V, 2003, pencil, tissue paper, resin. Over 120,000 one-inch lines
drawn on tissue paper, torn, overlapped and brushed with resin. Suspended from metal rods. 30 numbered 21” x 21” panels
Each panel increases in density until the transparent surface is blacked out.

5. accumulations and variations, 2006, two light boxes, 24 individual prints of twine inked, on tissue paper brushed with resin. 25” x 18” x 4-3/4” each box
6. accumulating marks by standing and striking a vertical surface with a pencil, 2005, striking a vertical surface with a pencil working from right to left, advancing the paper after each session, 36” x 1800” scroll

8. accrete variation III, 2003-2004, pencil, tissue paper, resin. Over 150,000 half-inch circles drawn on sheets of tissue paper, torn, overlapped and brushed with resin.
50 numbered 14” x 14” panels
Each panel increases in density until the transparent surface is blacked out continuing with a
percentage of blue circles added to each panel.

10. infinite drawing #3, 2007, tracing paper, Micron pen. Originating from a ¼” linear
grid each drawing is the product of the previous drawing by overlaying and
mapping different points of intersection or neutral spaces. Interconnected
reconfigurations of the organic grid, 19-1/2” x 31-1/2”

catalyst I, 2006-2007, tracing paper, Micron pen, sound. Tracing interior and exterior
forms of 489 rubber bands in black ink on 3’ sections of paper. Each time the paper
advances one band is removed and one traced in red, two 18” x 1800” scrolls

14. catalyst III, 2006-2008, black ink, rice paper, rubber, wood blocks. Inking and
dropping a circular piece of rubber and printing with the weight of my body. Each
print increases by one drop. Process continues until the entire surface is darkened.
Displayed with the piece of rubber and printing blocks, over 50, 19-1/2” x 18” prints,
numbered and dated

Artist Bio
Charles Livingston was born in 1967, Woodbury, NJ In 1980 he attended the Colorado Institute of Art for graphic design and received his BFA with an emphasis in art history from Metropolitan State College of Denver in 2000. During his BFA he worked as a custom area rug designer for a firm in Denver and exhibited his paintings and sculpture with several galleries in the local area. Of these venues he was invited to display in an exhibition entitled Growth and Decay at the Fort Collins Museum of Contemporary Art, Colorado. The last public exhibition of his paintings was at Andenken Gallery, Denver in 2002.
Charles received his MFA from the University of Connecticut in 2004. During that time he produced a CD of sound works that originated from his experiences of working in the studio called soundsketches: a compilation of sound for the experiencer. He also published Accrete: A Compilation of Notes, Diagrams, Drawings, and Journal Entries, a catalog of his working process on file at The Museum of Modern Art Library /Franklin Furnace /Artist Book Collection and The Thomas J. Dodd Research Center at The University of Connecticut. |
