Artist Statement
Revealing Possibilities
My earliest notions of happiness have to do with drawing and coloring. I didn't know it then, but even in kindergarten I was trying to attain the state of mind that Robert Henri writes about in The Art Spirit:
"The object, which is back of every true work of art, is the attainment of being, a state of high functioning, a more than ordinary moment of existence. In such moments activity is inevitable its result is but a by-product of the state, a trace, the footprint of the state. These results, however crude, become dear to the artist who made them. They are likewise interesting to others because they are to some extent readable and reveal possibilities of greater existence."
Robert Henri, The Art Spirit
The attainment of this state is akin to feeling my way around a dark room, led by another sense, an internal compass which guides me toward my subconscious with a hypnotic lucidity. Being in this state enables me to leave my footprint of emotion-saturated color, flickering pattern, and awkward beauty. My offering to the world. Giving myself over to this compass produces an almost addictive sensation of trepidation, like rollercoaster butterflies. I can only hope to illicit the feeling I've felt in the presence of any great work of art. Something sublime. An affirmation that paintings are worth painting. An ache for what's possible.
Lingering obsessions: paint, color-a diary of color, tension played out with strange meetings of color, dichotomy, a dual nature, the id vs. the superego, deliberation vs. impulse, starkness and lushness, building and destroying, lopsidedness, struggle, the trance of pattern, strings of lights, bursts of dazzle, existing with conflict-internally and externally, visual opulence, the sensation of flooding. |
