Artist Statement
My work deconstructs landscape within the framework of abstraction. I am interested in the gestural qualities and crystalline structures developed by modernist abstraction; which I use to create panoramic, virtual landscape surfaces which hover between 2 and 3 dimensions.
I find the inherent contradiction of the painted surface useful: vivid physical object versus illusionistic space. My working process is involved with creating painted surfaces that wrap around walls, are in corners, or are fallen to the floor.
This portfolio should be viewed as one continuous landscape, where the individual paintings function as snapshots of a greater, multidimensional landscape system. The subject of this landscape system is physical geologic material, such as rocks, fossils, air, ocean, and interstellar space in the process of formation. |

Artist Bio
Caleb Nussear is an artist living and working in Brooklyn, NY. He is a current fellow at the Center for Emerging Visual Artists in Philadelphia, PA, and recently completed a residency at the Vermont Studio Center. In the camp of non-representational painting, his work interweaves gestural opacities and crystalline structures to present newborn information systems or configurations of information. These systems, continuously folding and unfolding throughout their perception as details are revealed and concealed, evolve as vivid physical objects in the world, as objects that possess reflexive intelligence and function as animal life forms. In current and future work, Mr. Nussear pushes the limits of the 2-dimensional painted surface by either accentuating the work’s attachment to the wall or pulling the work from the wall, and out into space, utilizing the horizontal space of the floor in conjunction with the vertical.
