Artist Statement
I am a Tate. I come from a long line of people with a passion for baseball, cheese sauce and fried foods. Growing up as a Tate has only strengthened my excessive relationship with food and sports.
Hot dogs, corndogs, cupcakes, Twinkies, and Chicago style pizza are all worthy of attention, but none of these tasty treats has the personality of a donut. It is an all-day snack for cops and truckers, the traditional sugar splurge at church-basement meetings of Alcoholics Anonymous, and the only proper snack at apple cider parties. Like ice cream, it is happy food, good for a pig-out in order to eradicate depression at any time of day, and coffee’s best friend in the morning.
Because it is such a seductive, satisfying thing to eat, the donut serves as an icon representing all the gluttinous foods that I refuse to give up to be somebody’s ideal. It is perfect…. cute, innocuous, but not exactly health food.
Contrary to what would appear to be my apparent adoration for myself, I have never been one to be in front of a camera. I am using these photographs and images as a strange form of personal therapy. I am attempting to neutralize my insecurity by putting myself on display.
For me, food is wonderful.
Food is family.
Food is comfort.
Food is euphoric.
Being thin is not worth giving up food.
