Artist Statement
My work involves film, photography, painting and the combination thereof. All are my passions and observation is my first passion and tool for beginning this process. I often work with watercolor, gouache and egg tempera together with graphite pencil, pastel and other mediums that when combined have a less predictable outcome. I find those accidental discoveries more interesting than the often structured and predestined directions in which my earlier single-medium work led me.

In some of the work, I begin with a photograph I have taken or a screen shot from a film I have made. It’s the moment they were captured that I find provocative. I will print such selections and respond again by painting into the image. I compose a layering of ideas, comparisons and juxtapositions that form their own world and are open to interpretation.

I am intrigued and attracted to the idea of the arrested state of decay and all of its mysterious beauty, patterns and the way in which it retains a complex yet organic order. This happens in nature and in the built environment. The patterns in my work often start with edges and lines that move and weave their way through the work, finding their place in the context of the composition and its borders almost subconsciously. The instinctive connections between one shape and another are something of a puzzle that works out with exploration and experimentation. A friend referred to my work as “a landscape of the mind,” I think of it as a creative stream of consciousness, where I am building and creating a different kind of tension and structure, space and sensibility. The ambiguity of space and perspective are elements I use in much of my work in order to create images that immerse the viewer into the unique compositional relationships, but in a way wholly defined by his or her point of view.

Artist Bio
From 1976 - 1998 I worked in the fashion industry and co-owned the store Toby Lerner. From 1999 - 2006 I worked as a business, design and creative consultant to people in the fashion world.

I spent 2002 - 2003 at the American Academy in Rome with my husband, who had won a Rome prize that year. It was a life-changing experience to be immersed in an intimate community of artists and scholars. I am now more committed to pursuing the path of making art more than ever before.
