About the Exhibition:

Opening: Friday, October 20, 6 pm

On October 20th Philadelphia based artists will report on what they did over the summer in Back to School, a multi-media exhibit curated by the Schuylkill River School of Art.  The exhibit will explore how local artists spend their summer and the ways in which season and landscape influence the creative process.  The group will also reflect upon what summer should truly be -vacation or not -a time of escape.

The exhibit will include recent converts to Philadelphia: photographer and Temple University faculty member Justin James Reed, ceramicist Mandy Gerth whose work Daydream was recently shown in the Rosenwald-Wolf Gallery’s Window on Broad, and Boston-native (he even has the accent) and member of The Exposure Project Collective, Eric Watts. Book artist, photographer and documentarian Olivia Antsis will show work from her summer road trip, and Laurie Fitzpatrick who has shown in galleries throughout Philadelphia including Vox Populi, Highwire and the Main Line Art Center will have sculpture on display.  Carole Loeffler, whose fiber work is exhibited extensively throughout the country, psych rock legend and multi-media artist John Gibbons, curator Liz Afif, andpainter Jon Schoff, who has shown work in Philadelphia, San Francisco and Boston, will also go back to school.

The Schuylkill River School is a team of Philadelphia-based independent curators, Sara Castillo and Carrie Cook. Sara Castillo currently works as Communications and Membership Coordinator for First Person Arts and recently curated the exhibit “Ragtag” at the Amber Street art studios. Carrie Cook co-curated the show, “Closeknit” at the Coral Street Studio.  Castillo and Cook met coordinating acquisitions for major international corporations, and formed The Schuykill River School of Art in order to promote and showcase Philadelphia’s unique and unruly aesthetic.
