About the Exhibition
Opening reception: Saturday, December 6, 3 - 6 pm This is the third show at Gross McCleaf for Trefny, who graduated with a BFA from Syracuse University and an MFA from the Hoffberger School of Painting, Maryland Institute College of Art. He has had numerous one-man shows at galleries in the region, including Mangel Gallery and Giannetta Gallery in Philadelphia, Stephen Scott Gallery in Baltimore, and the Noroton Gallery in Darien, Connecticut. Trefny’s paintings are a dynamic fusion of vigorous paint application, considered composition and the sheer beauty and delicacy of his subject matter.

Gerrit Henry, writing in Art in America, has said:
Trefny is a master at turning realistic configurations into painterly abstractions and his canvasses can be read over and over again for their many incidents of exalted painterly brushwork in his renderings of brocades, Chinese screens, pagoda tables, oriental fans, flower arrangements and spreads of brilliant silks. Trefny haunts antique and junk stores before spending days assembling his objets into a setup he can live with and paint. The results are astonishingly beautiful canvasses, presenting many vistas all at once.
