Lazertown! Art Collective Member Matthew F. Dougherty takes violence and obscenity back to its most basic design and then forms it on paper in such a minimalist approach that even a child would understand its cold harsh reality. In his latest edition of Expressionist Illustrations, Matthew displays an acute understanding of the terror and fear injected into modern society by Government, Terrorist and Citizen alike. During his time studying fine art in NYC, he was directly affected and influenced by the terror and misfortune of September 11th and the aftermath that followed. Dougherty's expressionistic approach is directly related to the styles and schools invented in the early part of the 1900's during WWI in Austria; these included the invention of 'wordless novels' by Frans Masereel and Alfred Kubin. Matthew Dougherty is documenting our time in this country and the world in a way that everyone can feel bleeding through the minimalist lines of his simplistic creations. Matthew has studied many different styles, methods and schools of Art. He has found this part of his work leading him to create with a more minimal approach to convey a very clear message about a very important subject: Life in the 21st Century.
