Seraphin Gallery, now representing the Bertoia drawing estate, is excited to announce Harry Bertoia: Forty Years of Drawing. This exhibition will feature approximately 25 of these rarely-seen, one-of-a-kind monoprints from the estate of Harry Bertoia. Though Bertoia is renowned for his large-scale sculptures, his drawings were a staple in his creative process throughout his forty years of artmaking. The exhibition will also feature a fully-illustrated 118 page catalogue, with an even greater in-depth survey of his drawings.

The Bertoia sculpture pieces and his drawings represent an inner vision beginning in the 1940s, that of complete abstraction. His lines, shapes and colors relfect his thoughts as he experienced them. In the mid-1940's, Hilla Rebay, the director of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation Museum of Non-Objective Painting in New York, purchased nearly 100 of Bertoia's drawings for the museum. Beautiful public sculptures by Bertoia can be seen in a multitude of locations, including a hanging altar piece at the MIT chapel, a large welded screen in the Dallas Public Library, a striking fountain at the former location of the Civic Center here in Philadelphia. His sculpture commonly incorporated movement and sound- often allowing the viewer direct interaction with his pieces to activate their sound.
